Modern Before Modern
Lecture
$350
Think modern quilting is a 21st-century invention? Think again!
Modern Before Modern takes you on a captivating journey through quilts from the early 1800s to 1980 that showcase bold graphics, striking minimalism, and unexpected artistry—long before the modern quilting movement was named.
This engaging presentation highlights how today’s “modern” aesthetic is deeply rooted in quilting’s past. You’ll never look at historic quilts the same way again!

Enduring Elements:
200+ Years of Quilt Blocks
and Motifs
Lecture
$350
In this lecture, we’ll trace the journey of quilt blocks, quilt motifs, and other quilty elements over the past two (plus) centuries—from their earliest appearances in domestic and decorative contexts to their modern reinterpretations.
We’ll look at how stars, log cabins, florals, fauna, squares, and triangles have shown up again and again—sometimes transformed, sometimes remarkably unchanged.
Along the way, we’ll explore how these motifs have transcended cultural and geographical boundaries.
It’s a celebration of continuity—and the creative spark that moves through time, always looking for a willing maker.

Fan Girl – A Crazy Lady!
Workshop
4-hour: $450, 6-hour: $600
With a circa 1910 crazy quilt as our inspiration, we’ll make fan blocks using simple, quick, and fun methods. Students use decorative or straight stitches on their machine to create this quilt. I’ll show you how to use the simple herringbone embroidery stitch to add an additional layer of design to the straight-stitch applique. This workshop is great for the confident beginner, but is also loads of fun for experienced piecemakers. The result is a bold and graphic design! (Pattern has fabric requirements for a pillow front, table runner, and quilt.)
Techniques: Raw-edge machine applique, hand embroidery (optional)
