Ready to Research a Quilt? Let's Begin Together.

Do you want to learn more about a special quilt in your collection—but aren’t quite sure where to begin?

Join quilt historians Lisa Erlandson and Tara Miller August 13-16 in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the very first Research Rave, a welcoming, hands-on workshop designed to help you uncover the stories behind your quilts.

Over the course of three days, we’ll gather at the beautiful main branch of the Cincinnati Public Library, where you’ll receive step-by-step guidance on how to approach quilt research with care and curiosity. Lisa and Tara will share examples of their own research journeys, and support you as you begin exploring the history of your own quilt—or quilts—including tips for using census records, newspapers, archives, and more.

You don’t need to have any prior research experience. You just need your interest, your questions, and your quilt.
And you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll be surrounded by a community of fellow quilt lovers and learners, with access to research librarians and personalized support throughout the week. After our time in Cincinnati, we’ll continue the conversation and offer additional guidance through follow-up Zoom sessions designed to keep your momentum going and celebrate your discoveries.

This isn’t just a workshop—it’s an invitation to connect more deeply with your quilt’s story, and to the lives and hands that made it.

We’d be honored to support you on that journey.

Your Research Guides

Meet Your Guides: Lisa Erlandson & Tara Miller

Lisa and Tara are quilt and textile historians with a combined 30 years of experience researching, interpreting, and sharing the stories behind quilts and their makers. Both are active members of the quilt history community and have served together on the board of the American Quilt Study Group, as well as on several of its key committees.

Their work is grounded in curiosity, care, and a deep respect for the people—especially women—whose lives are stitched into the fabric of history. They believe that quilt research is not just about gathering facts, but about honoring makers, preserving stories, and building community.

Whether you’re completely new to research or already knee-deep in quilt mysteries, Lisa and Tara will meet you where you are—with encouragement, guidance, and the tools you need to move forward.

Joining the Syndicate

When you register for the Research Rave, you’re not just signing up for a workshop—you’re joining a community.

All participants in our Cincinnati event will become founding members of the Research Rave Syndicate, a growing network of quilt and textile enthusiasts who are passionate about uncovering the stories behind the quilts we love. As a member, you’ll receive access to a private, members-only email group where you can connect with us—Tara Miller and Lisa Erlandson—and with your fellow Syndicate members. This space is designed for support, shared discoveries, and encouragement. Ask questions. Share tips. Post photos of your quilts. Celebrate breakthroughs. We’ll be right there alongside you.

Your membership also includes:

  • A live Zoom orientation before the event, where you’ll meet other participants, hear more about what to expect, and start thinking about your research goals.
  • Ongoing support after the in-person gathering, with virtual follow-up sessions where you can share your progress, talk through challenges, and continue growing your research skills within a supportive circle of learners.

We created the Research Rave Syndicate because we believe that research isn’t just an academic exercise—it’s a personal journey, and it’s better when taken in good company. Whether you’re looking for guidance, camaraderie, or just a place to share your excitement when you find that one newspaper clipping or census record, this community is here for you.

You’re not doing this alone. You’re part of something bigger—and we’re so glad you’re here.

The Cincinnati Public Library

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we’ll gather in the newly built Cincinnati Public Library at 800 Vine Street, Cincinnati OH 45202.

We’ve reserved a spacious private meeting room, where we can lay out quilts and gather around them to discuss.

On Saturday morning, we’ll gather in a meeting area at our hotel for our Research Recap.

Our Hotel

We’ll stay in the Hampton Inn & Suites Cincinnati-Downtown. This Hampton Inn is located in an historic 1926 building that used to be the headquarters of the Cincinnati Enquirer. CR-Architecture + Design beautifully met the challenge of converting this 100-year-old structure into hotel accommodations, preserving many of the building’s unique architectural details.

Our hotel is conveniently located within walking or a short-drive distance to our research meeting room at the Cincinnati Public Library and amazing restaurants, and is easily accessible from the airport.
